GBPUSD: Sees Price Extension Below The 2.0132/181 Zone, August 14

GBPUSD-Having held above the 2.0132/181 zone in late July’07 and Aug 10’07, GBP broke through those levels on Monday exposing the 2.0059/72 levels, its April 25/26’07/May 01’07 after closing the session at 2.0123.

If the said zone fails to provide support and gives way the 1.9966/15 zone, its Jun 05’07 highs/Jan 23’07 high will be targeted with a loss of there opening the way for additional downside pressure towards 1.9824,April 03’07 high. Momentum indicators on the daily and weekly time frames continue to point lower suggesting further downside weakness.

Alternatively, on a bounce from its present price levels its 2.0132 level, .50 Ret (1.9632-12.0652)/April 18’07 high will be aimed at accompanied by 2.0181 set in July 30’07. Clearing this zone will put the pair in position to challenge higher prices towards 2.0219/05, its July 04’07 high/1.272 Fib Ext. (Monthly chart) and then the 2.0361/64 area, its July 11/12’07 highs. Above there lies more resistance levels at 2.0461, Aug 06 high and 2.0652, 2007 peak. All in all, as long as the pair continues to trade below the 2.0461 swing high, GBP remains vulnerable to further downside weakness.

GbpUsd Technical View, August 13

Cable formed an outside down bar on the weekly charts slipping briefly under the 2.0200 support. The week started with the pair moving lower and what seemed a reversal on Wednesday with a strong move up it was negated with an equal move on Thursday that brought the pair back close to the 2.0200 support line.

Friday’s price action formed a doji on the daily charts after the pair once again bounced from the 2.0150/60 area, with that in mind and with the overall trend still bullish we will be looking after possible resistance levels. Although the area above the current trading price is not very clear we can see the 2.0460 double top standing out as the closest bullish target and resistance level, if cable has enough strength to test last weeks high and get above it sights will be set on the YTD high at 2.0650 which is the main target for longs.

Conversely a continuation of the south move will get us below the 2.0200 and the pair will have to clear 2.0150 to get close to April 18th high of 2.0133 which was the yearly high for a few months this year; below 2.0133 we have only the 2.0000 round number as probably one of the most tempting bearish target one can spot on the charts.

GbpUsd Daily Technical View, August 1st

Cable tested the 2.0365 resistance and failed to break above it, after that it gave back around 150 points in a sharp move towards the 2.0200 support line. If the south move is going to continue we should see a break bellow the 2.0200 support either today or tomorrow, if that happens the next support is April 18th high of 2.0133 before the 2.0000 round number.

If the 2.0200 proves to be to strong and the pair doesn't get bellow it we might see the pair being range bound between 2.0200 and 2.0365; the short term bias is to the south but price needs to break the above mentioned support in order for us to be more relaxed about opening new trades. Of course one has to take into consideration that a new bounce from the 2.0200 level might push the pair to retest the 2.0365 resistance and even have enough energy to get above it, with that in mind closest resistance is the 2.0400 followed by the 2.0500, both of them are intermediary levels before the pair gets close enough to July 24th record high at 2.0650.

GbpUsd Daily Technical View, July 31st

Cable tested the 2.0200 support line when it opened Sunday night but it lacked the strength to go bellow it so it bounced back towards the 2.0365 resistance line. We did mention in out previous commentary that the pair might stop its downfall at the 2.0200 and either start a consolidation period or bounce back up, so far either scenarios could happen, in order that yesterday's move to be part of that bounce move we still need to make higher highs and get above 2.0365, if that won't happen the pair might slip lower down and retest the 2.0200 support before a new move starts.

A failure to hold on to yesterday's gains will start to put additional pressure on cable and we might see a break of the 2.0200 support level if that happens the next support is April 18th high of 2.0133 before the 2.0000 round number.

If on the other hand cable managed to get closer to 2.0365 and even break above it we have to pay attention to all those support levels the pair broke last week as they have turned now into resistance levels, closest one is the 2.0400 followed by the 2.0500, both of them are intermediary levels before the pair gets close enough to July 24th record high at 2.0650.

Cable formed a red candle on the weekly charts after 6 consecutive green ones. The pair made a new record high on Tuesday at 2.0653 before sinking about 400 points in the following days. We did mention that a reversal was possible but the strength and speed of it was a surprise, in just 3 days from a record high we have gotten very close to the 2.0200 support line, the pair smashed through 2.0500 and 2.0400 support numbers and halted only at 2.0250.

A continuation of the down move will have to break under the 2.0200 support line, and if that happens the next support is April 18th high of 2.0133 before the 2.0000 round number. At this point the 2.0000 level might act as a bear target just as it did when the pair was trading bellow it and the bulls were aiming at it.

On a different note, cable might stop its south sharp fall above the 2.0200 support line and either enter into a consolidation period or even reverse back up, if that will be the case all the support levels it broke through will act as resistance. We will continue to analyze price action especially around the 2.0200 level, if it gets that low, and see if this down move has the energy to continue or we have to expect a north reversal.

Daily Technical View, July 25th

Cable peaked above 2.0650 but it retraced a bit and is now trading under the 2.0600 support level. With divergence formed on the daily charts and slowing upside momentum we can start looking for a candlestick top pattern to form in order to consider changing the long bias and start opening short trades. A move south will have to bring the pair closer to 2.0500 to give a more stronger bear signal, closest support level is at 2.0450 followed by the 2.0365 former resistance now turned support and also a .50 Fib of the last move up. Conversely if the pair regains some strength we might see new highs being made this week, above the current trading price we can look at 2.0650 and 2.0700 for future resistance and levels that will act as bullish targets.

Cable seemed to have difficulties getting above 2.0600 yesterday with 2 failed attempts but early in the Asian session the pair broke through. Above the current trading price we can look at 2.0650 and 2.0700 for future resistance and levels that will act as bullish targets.

We still have to be on the lookout for a possible retracement and be aware of the support levels and how the pair might react to them, closest support level is at 2.0450 followed by the 2.0365 former resistance now turned support and also a .50 Fib of the last move up.

The pair's bias is still bullish and trading should reflect that on the longer timeframes, but contrarian or bearish traders might speculate any opportunity to open new shorts to add downside pressure to the pair in hope that this will trigger a south move.

Cable also made record highs getting just a few points from the 2.0600 resistance level. Most of the past week's move was made on Tuesday as the pair was reacting to both technicals and fundamentals, breaking above the 2.0365 resistance gave the pair an important boost and we saw price touching 2.0550, after an initial rejection from the resistance line on Thursday cable broke above in Friday's session and made a new record high at 2.0586.

The 2.0600 level is the closest resistance that needs to be broken in order that we see more gains; above 2.0600 there are no more clear resistance levels and we will need to pay attention at price action near round numbers as 2.0650 and 2.0700 to see if they can act as resistance levels.

On the other side one should be aware that a possible retracement might be in place after such a strong push north, if that will be the case the closest support level is at 2.0450 followed by the 2.0365 former resistance now turned support.

Cable formed a down bar on the daily charts, with the high and low inside the previous day's range, so a break outside of that range might indicate a more energetic move either above 2.0540 or bellow 2.0470.

A break towards the high (2.0540) will open up 2.0600 as a bull target while making new record highs. Conversely a break to the downside (2.0470) will start to put pressure on the pair and will bring into attention former resistance levels now turned into support, closest one being the 2.0370 area followed by the 2.0300 round number, if both of them fail to hold the pair above we have the 2.0200 which proved to be a tough resistance and should do the same as a support level. The daily charts are forming a bearish divergence so we need to be extra careful is assessing the situation and opening new trades.

GBP Continues To Challenge Higher Prices ?

GBPUSD-GBP opened the week higher on Monday and followed through to the upside on Tuesday testing a new 26-year high of 2.0474 at the end of the session. In addition to this, a new intra day high of 2.0547 was printed in early morning trading today which suggest further upside gains.

The only condition that might halt this upside view nearer term is the overbought condition now a factor on the daily time frame. If this materializes, a pullback towards the 2.0425 area, its 1.618 Fib Ext ahead of the 2.0361/64 levels, its July 11/12’07 highs could be seen.

Further support levels are located at the 2.0205/19 area, marking its July 04’07 high/1.272 Fib Ext.(Monthly chart), the 2.0132 level set in April’07 and then the 2.0059/72 levels, its April 25/26’07/May 01’07 highs. On the upside, the 2.0673 level, its Oct’1979 low serves as the next upside objective with a turn above there targeting the 2.0980 level, its Oct’1978 High. All the all, having clearly broken through layers of technical resistance levels, the pair is now facing overbought condition(extreme readings on momentum indicators) which implies the pair may reverse.

It's a good question. Is the EUR going to continue its ascension against the USD, or is it going to have to endure a small pullback on its way to the moon?

I say 1.4000, and I have three reasons why.

1. The U.S. economy has not yet felt the full impact of a slowing housing sector and a sub-prime let down. As food and energy prices continue to climb, more and more families are going to face foreclosure---and that's no good for anybody.

2. The European economy appears to be doing quite well. With the actual health of the U.S. economy still in question, investors are going to continue to reposition their assets in a more secure environment.

3. Finally, psychologically, global investors want to see the EUR/USD hit 1.4000, and the U.S. is not going to step in to stop the rally. For the time being, it is in the best interest of the U.S. government to have a weaker USD. Politicians can score big points if they can say they "had some part in" reducing the U.S. trade deficit.

One caveat, the EUR/USD may drop to support at 1.3600 before continuing on up to 1.4000, but it won't hit 1.3500 again any time soon.

GbpUsd Technical View, July 17th

Cable started the week with a small gain but it took todays GBP news to push it above 2.0400 which was the high established yesterday. The uptrend looks strong enough as we are making higher highs almost every day now. Next significant bullish target and possible strong resistance level is the 2.0500 round number.

On the other hand we have broken through many previous resistance levels that have now turned into support, close we have the 2.0300 if this doesn't hold an eventual price retracement bears might start putting pressure and push cable lower towards the 2.0200 support level, if that also fails we have April 18th high at 2.0133 as an intermediary support before the 2.0050 level and the 2.000 round number.

GBP Faces Overbought Nearer Term (July 13th)

GBPUSD-After a rise through layers of resistance levels following a bottom at 1.9622 in early Jun’07,GBP is now overbought suggesting that price may either consolidate or pullback in order to ease the said condition.

In such a situation, a push lower targeting the 2.0205/19 area, marking its July 04’07 high/1.272 Fib Ext. (Monthly chart) is expected with an invalidation of there opening the door for further downside weakness towards the 2.0132 level set in April’07. Below here will be needed to bring losses aiming at the 2.0059/72 levels, its April 25/26’07/May 01’07 highs and then at the 1.9966/15 zone, its Jun 05’07/Jan 23’07 highs.

On the upside, a clean break of 2.0361/64 levels, its July 11/12’07 highs will invalidate the downside view and bring the next upside target towards the 2.0425 level, its 1.618 Fib Ext ahead of the 2.0673 area, its 1979 low followed by its 1978 high at 2.0980.On the whole, GBP’s broader bias remains to the upside but may undergo nearer term set back to unwind its overbought condition now displayed on the daily time frame.

GBP-USD tested fresh highs near 2.0367 during the day and the pair has again reacted from that level, possibly implying that Resistance from the trendline on the 4-Hourly, joining the highs of 1.9786 (12-June) and 2.0198 (03-July) is strong. If that is crossed, then we are very likely to see another sharp rally towards 2.0389, the statistically projected Max High for the day.

On the downside the Support at 2.0300 is important and a break thereof exposes a fall towards 2.0250. The bias for the day is bullish and a sharp fall towards 2.0270 could be used to buy.

Gbp/Usd Technical View - July 10th

Cable started the week with what appeared to be a continuation of Friday's up move but it started to give back some points in today's Asian session, overall we are trading just above what used to be this year high at 2.0133, a level that has now turned into a support one.

If April 18th high at 2.0133 is not going to hold, the pair will more than likely slip lower towards the 2.0050 support zone and to the 2.0000 level, both important support areas that should keep cable above that constantly mentioned 2.0000 psychological level.

On the up side, if cable is to continue the uptrend we should see yesterday's high at 2.0170 being broken today with price making a push towards the current YTD high at 2.0205, once above that the road is clear and we'll have to asses the situation constantly to see where price could find any kind of resistance.

Cable has managed a 4th consecutive week of gains, but if we look at the weekly candlestick charts we can see it formed a toppish formation.

The week started very well for the British pound, the pair managing to break and stay above the 2.0133 top; the middle of the week was a battle between bulls and bears as the 2.0200 level proved to be a tough resistance, after 3 failed attempts to form a new high the pair slipped lower on Thursday and the move continued Friday morning while the markets waited for the NFP release, after the news cable started to recover some of the lost ground and managed to close the week just above the 2.0100 round number.

With a new high at 2.0205 we have a new primary target for bulls, but the candle formation we mentioned above is worrying and we will monitor the situation closely. A continuation of Friday's recovery move will set the sights on another push towards the 2.0205 high and if that's successful we are in for another record high in the last 26 years.

If on the other hand cable doesn't manage to hold above 2.0100 and falls again towards the 2.0050 support zone and lower on to the 2.0000 level one will have to pay close attention to price action around those levels as the bear pressure might become to strong and price might slip under.
